Beneath the Sands A hot wind blows across the dunes, dragging sand in its wake. It makes a hollow sound as it travels through the massive hull of a ship— a gigantic metal chunk that barely escapes above the allencompassing sand. A massive, clawed hand slowly closes over a piece of the ship, pulling itself up above the hull. An empty shape, an impossibility in the physical realm, looks slowly at its surroundings and growls softly. The void creature slinks deeper into the hull, away from the harsh rays of the sun.

Adventure Summary In Let Void Consume, the inquisitive Krik'il'hif, a ravenfolk merchant, hires the party as guards for a dangerous trek into the dunes in search of a grand treasure. However, the group quickly becomes entwined in a battle between the forces of the Void and the mysterious Void Watcher, a wizard who has kept the forces at bay for hundreds of years, if not longer.

Background

Working out of Yhasey, the City of Trade, Krik'il'hif the ravenfolk has been searching endlessly for buried treasure. Not just any treasure, but a treasure so rare, his companions laugh when he even mentions it: a crashed astral ship, from before the great astral conflict. They were said to have all been destroyed, but Krik'il'hif is convinced there is one buried in the sands near the city.

Meanwhile, a small fragment of the void has managed to infiltrate the Material Plane. A powerful wizard known as the Void Watcher has managed to hold back the void for many years, and she is attempting to prevent more from arriving. However, on her own, she is struggling to both maintain her portals and hold the attackers back simultaneously. The Void must be held back, but on her own, the Void Watcher’s chances of succeeding in this task lessen every day.

Krik'il'hif Krik'il'hif is an inquisitive ravenfolk trader obsessed with the crashed astral ship. He’s had varied success as a trader in the dunes, but his greatest victories have always come from his strange and ancient finds in the sands. Krik'il'hif is convinced if he can find the ship, his career will be elevated far beyond his current lot. The obsession began when he found an old map, filled with the ramblings of some explorer from long ago. The map noted the general location of the ship, buried in the dunes beyond the city. Though the map has little merit, Krik'il'hif tells everyone he knows this is his chance… if only he had some protection out in the dunes.

Unique Phrase: “Sand and lightning!” Desire: To become a well-known and influential trader. Fear: That he’ll perish in the dunes before finding anything of value. Misbelief: That as long as he does his best for as long as possible, he’s destined to be a master trader in no time.

The Void Watcher

The Ravenous

The Void Watcher is old, even by elven standards. With great mastery of arcane magic, she has held the Void at bay for countless years, but as her hold against it wavers, horrid creatures have begun to venture into the Material Plane.

An unusually powerful scaled aberration, The Ravenous is eternally hungry for material nutrients, a strange byproduct of the corruption process working slightly differently in his body. Mortal flesh is his favorite, and by conquering the Void Watcher’s isle, he hopes to lure her out and force her to create a permanent portal through which he may travel.

In order to maintain the wards she casts against the Void, the Void Watcher must visit a powerful hideout she keeps in the Astral Plane and recast the spells every few decades. Unfortunately, a powerful void creature known as The Ravenous has taken over her hideout, and with his minions has made the area too dangerous to cast spells in. The Void Watcher needs allies if she is to retake the area.

The Ravenous has little guile or cunning. He strikes viciously at whichever foe he despises the most, and is constantly overcome by hatred and emotion in battle. •

The Void Watcher speaks little, having dedicated so much time to her war against the Void that she has had little time for interaction with other humanoids. Despite this, she is kind to others and glad for the company when it comes to her. • • • •

Unique Phrase: “My hunger is greater than my patience.” Desire: To enter the Material Plane and feed endlessly. Fear: If he fails, he will never taste mortal flesh again. Misbelief: That he is immune to the dangers of addiction to his favored food source.

Nature of the Void

Unique Phrase: “Indeed.” Desire: To hold back the Void for as long as possible. Fear: Losing the fight to the Void after all this time. Misbelief: That she is the only one who can truly stop the Void.

The Astral Plane is an unusual place, with different laws to govern the physical movements of all matter. While in the void, all creature’s jumping distances are tripled, but their walking speed is halved. The light gravity of the area makes leaping great distances easy, but moving across the ground is difficult and awkward. Additionally, all falling damage is halved. Any Void creature does not suffer these effects unless they wish, having been accustomed to the environment.

Saving The Ravenous By defeating him but not slaying him, it is possible to send The Ravenous into the Argent State, cleansing the Void from his body completely. The Void Watcher is capable of casting such a ritual and is willing to do so if the party wishes, but she does not go out of her way to cleanse the Void creatures. For the ritual to succeed, The Ravenous must be at one-third of his total hit points for the process to function properly. If cleansed, his hunger is finally appeased and he is deeply grateful.

Adventure Hooks

⦿ ”Constitution.” When the party has traveled for around two hours in the heat, each member must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature’s speed is halved until they finish a short rest in the shade, out of the blazing sun. A creature resistant or immune to fire damage is immune to these effects.

There are many reasons why the players may be searching for the astral ship: •

Untold Riches. The ship likely holds treasures from a bygone age. Finding it could help the party with whatever wealth-driven goals they hold. Krik'il'hif has been pushing this aspect of the job, hoping it will attract more help. Ancient Tale. An ancient tale tells that during the Astral Conflict, a great star blazed from the heavens down into the dunes. Certain scholars believe this could be a ship, but none have been able to prove it. Hired Guards. Krik'il'hif hires the party to guard him when he sets out into the dunes, having finally raised enough money to track down the ship.

⦿ ”Perception.” With a successful DC 14 Perception check, a player can spot an oddity: small amorphous blobs, so tiny they blend in with the sand. The blobs are pitch black and wriggle slightly. Characters familiar with the Void recognize it as a small piece of its essence. THE SHIP

Read the following as the players arrive at the ship. KRIK'IL'HIF CONSULTS HIS MAP, THEN LOOKS UP.

Prologue

“WE’VE MADE IT.”

Regardless of which adventure hook you choose, Krik'il'hif requests the player’s help in finding the ship, buried deep in the sands. Read the following to your players:

IN THE DISTANCE, A LARGE, DARK MOUND JUTS OUT FROM THE SAND. A LIGHT SHEEN, DULLED BY YEARS IN THE DESERT, REFLECTS THE SUN’S RAYS SLIGHTLY. AS YOU APPROACH, YOU HEAR A DULL GROWL, AND A MASSIVE SHAPE CLIMBS TO THE TOP OF THE SHIP’S HULL.

A SMALL, BLACK-FEATHERED CREATURE IN A CLOAK WALKS TO YOU, BEARING AN INSIGNIA OF A MERCHANT. INQUISITIVE EYES STARE UP AT YOU.

EMPTY, LARGE, AND HORRIFIC, THE CREATURE IS MADE OF PURE VOID ENERGY. THOUGH IT HAS NO EYES, ITS FACE FOCUSES ON YOU AND IT DROPS TO A LOW CROUCH. MORE CREATURES EMERGE FROM AROUND THE SHIP.

“FORGIVE MY FORWARDNESS, FRIENDS, BUT I’VE BEEN ASKING FOR HOURS AND NO ONE WILL ACCEPT THE TASK SO I’M BEGINNING TO RUN OUT OF TIME. I AM KRIK'IL'HIF. COULD YOU BE SO KIND AS TO

➤ ”Encounter!" x1 Void Interloper and x4 Void Spawn, using Map 1. They have wandered the dunes and gone on a rampage, but despise the bright desert and are now in a murderous frenzy.

ACCOMPANY ME DEEP INTO THE DANGEROUS DUNES FOR A LEGENDARY PIECE OF HISTORY THAT MAY OR MAY NOT ACTUALLY EXIST?”

Krik'il'hif offers the players 500 gold pieces each and access to half of any spoils they find. Read the following as the group sets out into the dunes: THE SUN BEATS DOWN ACROSS THE HARSH SANDS, SENDING WAVES OF HAZE ACROSS THE LANDSCAPE. AS YOU VENTURE AFTER THE SHIP, KRIK'IL'HIF HUMS QUIETLY TO HIMSELF, A LOCAL FOLK SONG MEANT TO WARD OFF EVIL.

Act 1: Into the Dunes Traveling across the dunes is no easy feat. In order to succeed, the players must overcome the sweltering heat and sandy terrain. While venturing across the desert, the group faces these challenges and more. DUNE TRAVEL

Read the following as the players travel the dunes. THE HEAT IS BRUTAL, AND THE RARE BREEZES, THOUGH PLEASANT, WHIP SAND INTO YOUR EYES. ENDLESS DUNES STRETCH OUT IN EVERY DIRECTION.

⦿ ”Investigation.” Once the threats are defeated, a successful DC 13 Investigation check reveals 50 gold pieces in the hull of the ship. Most of the remainder looks like it’s damaged beyond repair, but there are traces of the void creatures within.

OPENING THE PORTAL

When all enemies have been defeated, read the following to the players. THE LAST OF THE CREATURES DISSIPATE INTO NOTHINGNESS AS THE WOMAN RIPS THE ENERGY IN TWO, CREATING A SMOOTH TEAR IN SPACE. THROUGH IT, YOU SEE A QUIET STONE TEMPLE OF SORTS, SURROUNDED BY EMPTINESS AND GLOWING WITH A SINISTER PURPLE LIGHT.

Read the following to the players after they have searched the ship. KRIK'IL'HIF PICKS UP A HANDFUL OF SAND, THEN WALKS A FEW PACES AND PICKS UP MORE.

“I AM THE VOID WATCHER.” THE WOMAN SAYS. SHE SAYS NO MORE, DESPITE THE NUMEROUS QUESTIONS FLOODING YOUR MINDS.

“VOID. IN THE SAND.” HE SAYS. THEN HE TURNS TO YOU.

⦿ ”Persuasion.” Though the Void Watcher speaks little, she can be persuaded to reveal a bit more information about herself with a successful DC 14 Persuasion check. She explains that she is a guardian against the void, and has been keeping them at bay for many, many years. Recently, the void has been more successful in entering the Material Plane, and she needs to perform a protection ritual to keep them at bay for a while longer. Unfortunately, her casting hideaway has been discovered and overrun by Void creatures, and she needs help clearing it out in order to cast the spell.

“THIS ISN’T OVER YET. WE DON’T HAVE OUR GREAT PRIZE, BUT WE CAN FIGURE OUT HOW THOSE THINGS GOT INTO THE DESSERT. I’M WILLING TO BET THERE’S SOMETHING OF VALUE, WHEREVER THAT IS.”

If the players choose to follow the trail with Krik'il'hif, they proceed to Act 2.

Act 2: On the Trail THE BROKEN BRIDGE

⦿ ”Arcana.” A player that succeeds on a DC 15 Arcana check can recognize that this portal leads to the Astral Plane, but this area has seemingly been conquered by the Void.

Read the following to the party as they approach the end of the trail: A MASSIVE STONE BRIDGE SPANS A SMALL PORTION OF A CHASM BEFORE BREAKING OFF ABRUPTLY. BELOW, A HUGE, SWIRLING MASS OF DARK ENERGY RIPPLES, PULSING SLIGHTLY BUT OTHERWISE REMAINING IN PLACE. AT THE END OF THE BRIDGE, A ROBED WOMAN HOLDS OUT A HAND TOWARDS THE ENERGY, SEEMINGLY DEEP IN CONCENTRATION.

If the players wish to assist the Void Watcher, they proceed to Act 3.

KRIK'IL'HIF APPROACHES HER, CAUTIOUSLY AT FIRST AND THEN BUILDING UP CONFIDENCE. “HOW DO YOU DO?” HE ASKS. SHE DOES NOT RESPOND, BUT GESTURES WITH HER HEAD BEHIND HER. AS YOU TURN, YOU SEE MORE VOID CREATURES APPROACHING. “STOP THEM.” THE WOMAN SAYS AS SHE GRITS HER TEETH. FAR BELOW, WHATEVER MAGIC SHE IS WEAVING STRUGGLES TO OVERCOME THE MASSIVE BURST OF VOID.

➤ ”Encounter!” x2 Corrupted Gatherers attack emerge and attack. They attempt to attack the Void Watcher, but ultimately focus on whoever attacks them the most. When the gatherers are slain, a Corvid Shade and x3 Void Spawn appear and attempt to attack as well. All creatures fight fiercely and to the death.

Act 3: All-Encompassing

When The Ravenous is defeated, read the following to the players:

As the players step through the portal, read the following.

THE BEAST REELS BACK, SWINGING WILDLY IN THE AIR, BEFORE COLLAPSING AND TWITCHING ON THE GROUND. A BRIGHT LIGHT ERUPTS FROM THE CENTER OF THE ISLE, AND THE AREA IS FLOODED WITH BRILLIANT STARLIGHT.

PURE SILENCE SETTLES OVER YOU, BROKEN ONLY BY THE OCCASIONAL SCUFFLE OF FEET ON STONE. A VAST, ANCIENT MOTE MAKES UP THE ISLAND. THE SKY IS A PURE, INKY BLACK. YOU HAVE THE DISTINCT, UNPLEASANT FEELING OF BEING WATCHED.

THE VOID WATCHER MARCHES TOWARDS THE COLUMN OF LIGHT, HOLDING HER HAND ALOFT AND EXPANDING IT THROUGHOUT THE ISLES.

CASTING PLACE

This casting place is being watched by an unusually powerful Scaled Void Aberration known only as The Ravenous and a few of his minions. When the players cross further into the area, read the following:

⦿ ”Ravenous Eye.” Regardless of whether he is slain or turned to the Argent State, the Ravenous possesses a magical eye, a Void Sensor. THE RAVENOUS DEFEATED

A MASSIVE BEAST EMERGES, ALMOST INDISTINGUISHABLE FROM THE DARKNESS AROUND IT, AND GROWLS SOFTLY. YOU HEAR THE FLAPPING OF WINGS AS MORE VOID CREATURES EMERGE TO DO BATTLE.

With the Ravenous defeated, the Void Watcher can once again use her hideout to cast protection spells. She blocks most of the Void from its approach, and the area returns to relative safety.

➤ ”Encounter!” x2 Corrupted Gatherers attack. Their master is trying to gauge the danger of the interlopers, and does not battle himself. He instead disappears back into the void and watches from the shadows. When the gatherers are defeated, The Ravenous emerges from the Void and attacks. He wants the Void Watcher alive and will knock her unconscious, but is willing to kill all other creatures. Encounter Difficulty: The Void Watcher can assist in this fight, as it is very difficult for characters of this level. If you wish for a more challenging encounter, the Void Watcher could be attempting to cast the protection spell while the players hold off the enemies. Be warned: without the Void Watcher, this encounter can quickly become deadly. When the Ravenous has been reduced to half his maximum hit points, read the following: A HORRIFIC SHRIEK RISES UP FROM THE CREATURE AS HIS SCALES VIBRATE RAPIDLY. CRAWLING FROM THE SHADOWS EMERGE HORRIFYING VOID CREATURES.

x4 Void Spawn emerge and join the fight. The Ravenous gains the following benefits for the remainder of the battle: • • •

His Aberrant Scales immediately recharge. His AC increases by 3. His burrowing speed doubles.

Epilogue The Void Watcher thanks the party for their help and teleports them home, after which Krik'il'hif thanks them for their help and pays them in full. He insists he will someday repair the ship and take it back to the skies.

Magic Items VOID SENSOR

Wondrous item, uncommon This strange eye is filled with dark energy. As a bonus action, a creature may learn the location of all Void creatures within 100 feet of themself. This ability can be used three times, and all uses are restored at dawn.
