Piper Chapman (Taylor Henning), goed opgeleide vrouw uit dito kringen met trouwplannen en een leuke nieuwe start-up, wordt ruw geconfronteerd met haar wilde jaren als ze een straf moet uitzetten voor een vergrijp van tien jaar eerder, als koerier van drugsgeld. Haar verloofde en vrienden wijzen haar niet af, maar accepteren het feit dat de persoon die ze door en door dachten te kennen iemand blijkt met een strafblad die vervolgens een jaar achter de tralies verdwijnt. Niet meteen geloofwaardig; dat de makers er toch mee wegkomen is op conto van de innemende, overtuigende hoofdrolspeelster en het intelligente script. Eenmaal achter de tralies ontspint zich een dramaserie die tegen het feelgood-genre aanschurkt maar gelukkig aan de goede kant blijft van de streep, en dan verandert in een pakkend verhaal over het gevangenisleven. Opnieuw een Netflix-serie die verrast door de hoge kwaliteit.
